The Lord is My Shepherd Psalm 23
Psalm 23:1-3 “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
He guides my path! That in itself is an awesome discovery. To know that God does lead us, guide us, direct us and make our path one that follows after Him is simply astounding.
One of my favorite scriptures is Proverbs 3:5,6 and it is probably quoted more than most in regards to God’s direction for our lives. It suggest as well as verse three of Psalm 23 that GOD does have planned paths for us to follow. God longs for us to walk in paths that will bring joy and peace to our lives. We must have faith to know GOD has our best interest at heart. We must trust Him. We must let our whole heart worship Him. We must put aside our human desire and our human understandings.
We must rely on His Spirit to guide us. It is keenly important for us to acknowledge that the GOD of the universe cares about my path, my direction, my comings and goings. To experience the leading of the Holy Spirit is unfathomable. The Holy Spirit leads us in ways we thought were impossible but He does it. How awesome to know that He guides my path!
Psalm 23:3 gives us great insight into how God guides our path. He guides me in paths of righteousness. A shepherd does not merely set the sheep to go off into a general direction. A shepherd goes ahead of them and guides them along specific paths the he determines. Another interesting thought in this text is that David the writer of this Psalm speaks about how a shepherd leads us. He leads me, he restores my soul, he guides me. Although the job of a shepherd is to lead the whole flock David emphasizes that God’s guidance is for each one of us individually.
Let God through His spirit lead your path. Let Him direct you so that you will not stray, you will not become lost, you will find rest. Let God be the light that leads you through the dark valleys, the unlit roads, and through the storms of life. Without a doubt, if we trust Him he will guide us in paths of righteousness.
