Devotional Psalm 23:1-3 number 2
Psalm 23:1, 2 It said, “The Lord is my Shepherd. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” Verse 3 “He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.”
“Our Shepherd shows compassion to us because he knows we’re weak, fragile creatures.” He doesn’t just bring us back from wanderings, He gives us life in every area of our lives. He truly restores our soul.
What exactly is our soul? As I shared with you on Monday, the Hebrew word nephesh or the Greek word psyche are the words for soul. These two words occur well over 800 times in the Scriptures. And when you study the word you will discover the use of these words in the Bible refers to people, animals and the life that a person or animal has in it.
Let’s see some scriptures about people’s soul. I Peter 3:20, “In Noah’s day… a few people, eight souls were carried safely through the water” Noah, his wife, his three sons, and their wives. Exodus 16;16 mentions instructions given to the Israelites regarding the gathering of manna. They were told to gather it “according to the number of the people (souls) that each of them had in his tent. So the amount of manna that was gathered was based on the number of people in each family. The great word here is that GOD provides for each one of us based on the needs that each of us have.
Sometimes the word “soul” means the life of a person. Jehovah told Moses: “All the men who were seeking to kill you (seeking your soul) are dead” Exodus 4:19. Moses enemies were seeking and trying to take Moses life. In Genesis 35:16-19 says while Rachel was giving birth to her son Benjamin, “her life was slipping away (her soul was departing).”
Jesus words to us are this… John 10:11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd who surrenders his life (soul) in behalf of the sheep. Jesus gave his soul, his life, in behalf of mankind. In the Bible the Hebrew word for life is soul. Jesus provides for our every need. He provides for everyone. He gives His life so that we might have life.
Psalm 62:5 My soul, waits in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.
Psalm 66:9 Who keeps us in life, And does not allow our feet to slip.
Psalm 107:9 For He has satisfied the thirsty soul, And the hungry soul He has filled with what is good.
Psalm 103:1, 2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And all that is within me, bless His holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of His benefits;
GIVE GOD THANKS FOR ALL HE HAS DONE. LET YOUR SOUL MAGNIFY THE LORD!
